El teniente Somerset (Morgan Freeman), del departamento de homicidios, está a punto de jubilarse y ser reemplazado por el ambicioso y brillante detective David Mills (Brad Pitt). Ambos tendrán que colaborar en la resolución de una serie de asesinatos cometidos por un psicópata que toma como base los siete pecados capitales: gula, pereza, soberbia, avaricia, envidia, lujuria e ira.
En la búsqueda del asesino, se mezclan los conflictos personales de ambos personajes y las horribles muertes que van desplegándose al paso de su investigación.
La siguiente secuencia muestra la falsa expectativa de captura del asesino, que lleva a los detectives a descubrir a una más de sus víctimas, en este caso, el pecador perezoso.
A pesar que la secuencia final es la más impactante, elegí la siguiente por la tensión generada a través de la expectación de los policías por atrapar al asesino, trasladada de manera eficaz, en imagen, narración y música, al espectador.
